To mark the 100th anniversary of Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, the Stadsarchief Amsterdam produced this time lapse animation of how the airport has grown, from its start as an airbase in WWI, to its destruction during WWII, and its rapid postwar rebuilding and growth into the principal airport for the Netherlands.

When I passed through Schiphol (sleeping on the floor for a night waiting for a delayed flight), I noticed a TON of police officers with drug-sniffing dogs. I was surprised, I guess they only want people buying their drugs in Amsterdam, not bringing them from home.

Exactly. I doubt they sell dope in the duty free shop.

Awesome, how could I have missed this as a Dutchman?

I think the fact that the video starts with a lake, which is then turned into fields is the most impressive part(apart from the rapid rebuilding after WWII), because it really shows the inventiveness of the Dutch people.

Interestingly a replica of the control tower from 1928 has been built in an aviation themed theme park/museum, including a period interior.

That’s probably because the whole drugs situation here is a bit weird, like (government funded) organizations testing XTC and other drugs on festivals to see if they are safe weird. Some drugs are legal to buy, while a lot aren’t, but I think the police decided to only go after the big guys selling/smuggling drugs, because only fining small offenders doesn’t solve anything.

The police officers with drug-sniffing dogs probably where there to intercept drug traffickers from South America etc.

And here’s the real thing, taken in 1937. I have a modern photo similar to this, taken in front of the replica tower. But I can’t find it.

I checked while I was there, they don’t... I’m pretty sure they ONLY sell alcohol in most of them. I saw people getting into trouble for overweight carry-ons filled with bottles of booze.

Like everyone in Europe says, “damn British people...”

But I studied abroad in GB and I thought British people were fine, although I could have done without drunken sing-a-longs on airplanes. RyanAir didn’t give a shit. They don’t give a shit about much, though.

If Ryan Air is selling booze on a plane, they care more for the ££££ than they do about the safety of the pax or crew.

Hmm, I had never noticed those overwing jetways before:

Kinja'd!!!

Any other airports have those? The only other pic of a rear door jetway I found was this (apparently from SFO):

I know those doors get used for other loading/unloading, but it does seem like loading passengers from both the front and the back should greatly speed up loading.

I don’t know about double jetways, but they have triples for the A380. I think that was one of the big deals about the 380, that airports needed to improve their infrastructure to accommodate them. I don’t know what airport this is.

Here’s a triple at DFW. Looks like its serving an Emirates 380. That’s a long walk to get to the plane.

Yeah, I’ve seen the triples, but that seems a bit less helpful than being able to load from the front and back simultaneously. And while I haven’t flown an A380, it seems like the vast majority of the time when I’ve been on flights using double jetways, they are used so that first class passengers don’t have to deal with mere commoners walking past, as opposed to anything that would speed up loading.

When you pay all that money, you don’t want to have to mingle with the poors.

I think I’ve seen it too, though I couldn’t find it on google anymore.

I just saw a news item about Schiphol by the way. An expert was saying that Schipol shouldn’t invest in a new Runway, but should look into new modes of transport, as a way of expanding the airport in the near future. That ‘expert’ suggested they looked into hypertrains, rocket-planes(3 hours to NY) and space-trains(2 days to Mars). I don’t know what drugs he was using, but I do know that those won’t be realistic short term plans, haha.

Funnily enough there is a plan to do some flights from Lelystad in the near future, where the replica tower is located, so the original tower design would sort of come full circle.

Rocket planes. Right. We’ll get those the same time we get our flying cars.
